Practicing Spanish Vocabulary Through Drawing

Creative outlets such as drawing or crafting may help some children learn language and vocabulary. The process of visualizing and drawing helps children remember concrete vocabulary so that they can further use it and contextualize it.

Below is a simple activity you can do at home with a variety of ways to differentiate based on your child's age and language skills.

Draw the Details

Depending on the vocabulary theme, you can provide your child with simple detailed sentences and have them draw based on the detail. Of course the more adjectives you add the more specific their drawing will have to be. For children who are readers, they can read the details and draw based on what they read.

Stick Figures (practice vocabulary of body parts, emotions, articles of clothing)

Print or draw stick figures on paper, white-board, or cards. Say or print the following descriptive sentences.

Lleva un abrigo y botas negras.

Este esta triste y lleva un libro en la mano.

Ella tiene pelo largo con un moño amarillo.

Lleva bufanda y reloj.

Tiene un paraguas y esta contenta.

To differentiate you can make changes to the details like this:

Este lleva un sombrero y tiene lentes.

Este lleva un sombrero azul y tiene lentes cuadrados.

Este lleva un sombrero azul y tiene lentes cuadrados de color naranja.

Make a Scene (practice vocabulary of specific locations and prepositions)

Provide them with paper or white-board. Say or print the following descriptive sentences and have them draw it.

El gato está encima de una piedra.

La puerta roja rectangular está en el centro de la casa grande.

La luna brilla en el cielo lleno de estrellas.

El perro está al lado del camón.

El búho está sentado en la rama de el árbol alto.

Be creative and come up with your own. Building vocabulary can be fun and event artistic.
