Bilingüe Book Buddy is a monthly publication to promote biliteracy and activities for children ages 2-8. The activities that accompany each featured book are called "Libro-Tivities". Libro-Tivities are academic and fun activities to help families re-engage with bilingual books.

Reading bilingual books can promote biliteracy, inclusivity, and multiculturalism through storytelling, expressions or sayings, and illustrations. So pick up a book and have some fun!

3.a ABC Dots: Phonemic Awareness Activity

Materials Needed: Dot Stickers, Sharpie, Toilet Paper Roll (without toilet paper)

This activity is multidimensional. Depending on your goal this activity can have your child practicing color identification and/or letter naming and matching. First write each alphabet letter twice, one in each dot sticker. Next, stick one of each letter on the tube. Then, have your child choose a color to start with. Last, have your child choose the letter they’d like to peel and match. As they peel and search for the letter match you can sing the Spanish alphabet sound song which can be found here.

3.b Pattern Time: Math Activity

Materials Needed: (2) 12-slot Egg Cartons, Washable Paint, Paint Brush

Depending on your child’s age and ability you can have your child create their own pattern, match a pattern, and/or finish a pattern. Patterning allows children to use their mathematical reasoning as well as algebraic functions. First, cut the egg slots in strips. Then, paint the bottom of each egg slot in a specific color pattern. After the paint dries, cut the last painted egg slot from each strip. Lastly, have your child name each color in the pattern to help them identify the correct color to finish each pattern.

3.c Color Cloud: Art Activity

Materials Needed: 12x12 White Card-stock, Washable Paint, Misc. Tools

Children learn best through play, song, and lets not forget art! Crafting just to create art is always fun and allows your child to be openly creative without any restrictions or rules. We chose to make a colorful cloud to match the one on the book’s cover. First, allow your child to use brushes, fingers, or other materials to paint on a 12x12 white card-stock. After letting their art work dry, you or your child can cut out a cloud shape. Have your child choose where they’d like to display their art work and have it be a reminder of all the colors little Maya saw throughout her community - and all the colors we can spot in our own neighborhood too!
