Bilingüe Book Buddy: Hermanita / Hermanito
Looking for bilingual books? Nene Bilingüe has you covered with book recommendations and activities to foster bilingualism, connection, and learning in your home. This month join Mateo, Amaya, and their little brother Santiago; or Ximena, Miguel, and their little sister Ariana in stories about sibling bonding and love. These books show just how important it is to care for one another while we learn and have fun.
Reading bilingual books can promote biliteracy, inclusivity, and multiculturalism through storytelling, expressions, and illustrations.
Book Titles: Hermanita / Little Sister and Hermanito / Little Brother
Written by: Dr. Khalid White & Isela Garcia White, LCSW
3.a Deletrea la Familia: Literacy Activity
Materials Needed: Magnetic Letters, Dry-erase Board, Dry-erase Marker
Most words in Spanish begin with a CV (consonant-vowel) beginning syllable. For example: ma, me, mi, mo, mu. Using the magnetic letters create the beginning syllable and together brainstorm words that begin the same. Have your child write the ending of each word, or list of words. In doing so you have created a word family.
3.b Contando Familia: Math Activity
Materials Needed: Popsicle Sticks, Hot Glue, Small Objects/Counters, Number Cards (optional)
A ten-frame is a math tool with ten windows that helps children count and understand value of numbers by showing its quantity in an organized way. To make a ten frame, use popsicle sticks and hot glue to create the frame like the one pictured. You can create your own number cards 1-10 or use printables/cards of your choice. Using small erasers (we used robots, dinosaurs, and polar animals) to create a family with the number indicated. Making more than one ten-frame allows you to work with larger numbers and can also be used to show sums.
3.c Mi Familia: Art Activity
Materials Needed: Popsicle Sticks, Markers, Cardstock Paper, Markers or Art Supplies
Using the popsicle sticks create the frame of a house. Cut the white paper so that it can be glued to the back of the frame. Have your child depict your family unit while talking about the important roles they each play in keeping the home filled with love. Talk about how we each have responsibilities and how we all work together and help each other just like Mateo and Amaya or Ximena and Miguel.
